This week I want to share a fun video from Kid President about being thankful...also known as gratitude! He shares his list of 25 (well, 26 really) things that he's thankful for. After you've watched it I'd love to hear some of the things you're thankful for! Then, if you have an extra minute, watch the second video to find out why practicing gratitude is so important and how it can help you have a happier, healthier, and better all-around better life.

Hi everyone! I hope you're all still doing well! This week I wanted to share a fun(ny) video with you that talks about your "Circle of Control." If you don't know what this is, your circle of control helps you understand the things that you DO and DO NOT have control over in your life. Why is this important? Well, because when you know the difference it helps you solve your own problems, or, even better, avoid them altogether! Now, that doesn't mean the adults in your life (including me, your school counselor) aren't still here to help you out when you need us, but it doesn't mean you can add this to your toolbox of problem solving skills! Watch this video and think of all the things YOU actually have control over, and see if you can practice letting go of the things you don't! Take care!!! During a time in our country when it seems like so many people are divided and constantly disagreeing with one another, is always a good idea to remember to also find ways to be kind. It's amazing how much even a small act or word of kindness can cheer someone up. Watch the Kindness Boomerang in action in this short video and see if you can think of little ways to spread some kindness of your own. I'd love to hear what you did for someone else! Starting Monday, January 11th through the 29th, DCS students will be participating in a Read-A-Thon. Last week, all student should have received their individual login information and set up their accounts. On Monday, they should start entering in the number of minutes they read both during school and on their own time. This should be a fun way to for them to challenge themselves to read more and further develop their literacy skills. Classroom based rewards are being giving to students for reaching certain reading minute goals. (See attached flyer for available prizes, which are cumulative!) We are also doing this as a fundraiser for both our school and a local community shelter, McHenry House. This Read-a-Thon is being sponsored by the 7/8 students in our California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) group. They hope this fundraiser will bring in $300 for McHenry House with all remaining funds going towards helping out the Tracy Learning Center. Please ask your child about this event and have them share their accounts with you so get access to all the Read-a-Thon information and resources. Thank you ~DCS-CJSF
Do you know the difference between someone being rude to you, being mean to you, and actually bullying you? Most people (even adults) haven't really given the differences much thought. The reason it's important to learn the differences is because there's a different way to resolve each of these situations, and knowing the this will help you decide how to approach and correct the problem. This really short article and video can help you understand when someone is being rude, versus mean, versus bullying. In any of these situations, talking to an adult like me (your school counselor), a teacher, or your parents can be the best place to start resolving the issue. https://intermountainhealthcare.org/blogs/topics/pediatrics/2018/01/the-difference-between-rude-mean-and-bullying/

This week was the start of yet another twist to our 2020 learning model. On Monday, we had about 45% of our students return to on-campus learning while the other 55% continued with distance learning. We also returned to our full-day school schedules for all students. As with any big change, we need to be flexible and willing to make adjustments to how we do things. This week I'm sharing a video specifically helpful to our students at home who might still be struggling with online learning. Here are 10 tips that might help you out. And even if you only see one or two that work for you, that's one or two more tools didn't have before! Take care!!! Hello DCS students and welcome to Trimester 2! With our return to the fulltime schedule for all students (on campus and online) I will no longer be having my online Open Office hours Mondays and Fridays from 1-2pm. For students remaining online, you can reach out to me via email at [email protected] to set up an appointment to talk. Even though Fridays will be all "at home" activities for students, it's still a workday for me and could be an option for us to meet via Zoom, if needed. I can't wait to see many of you this Monday and am looking forward to this new way of hybrid learning together! Take care!!! ~Mrs. Prescott~
